Why Juice Fasting for 21 Days Works
Juice fasting for 21 days (or any amount of time) produces immense benefits for the body.
The main reason is found in the human digestive system.
Digestion of food and drink is a huge energy drain. To process and extract nutrients from the food we eat and the liquid we drink, our body has to spend a large amount of energy.
The amount of energy needed to digest food depends upon the type of food. Check out the raw food diet benefits for more information.
For example, processed foods are tough to digest. White bread? Yep. Pasta? Yep.
This also includes fast food and as a general rule, anything that isn’t fresh.
Even meat can be tough on digestion (a big reason behind why some people become Vegans).
In the Western world, many people struggle with energy. Getting up in the morning is a struggle. Getting things done is a struggle. Exercising is a struggle.
Any idea why?
Yep, you’ve got it – it’s the food we’ve been eating!
Think about it. Most of what we eat is highly processed and low on nutrients. How many fruits and vegetables have you consumed recently?
Combine the trouble with digestion with the fact that many of these foods have little to no nutritional value and we’re left with a big problem.
In fact, it’s a HUGE problem.
The reason why doing a 21 day juice fast works is that it fixes these problems, at least temporarily.
For 21 days, you consume nothing but fresh juice, ideally vegetable juice. Fresh vegetable juice is super easy to digest. In a sense, the juicer has “digested” it for you, which means that you’ll have surplus energy to use elsewhere.
Very little energy is needed to digest fresh juice. On top of that, fresh juice is extremely high in raw nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and potent digestive enzymes.
Herein lies the incredible benefit of doing a 21 day juice fast. Your body will have a lot more energy available to it to heal itself. Rather than spending the energy on digestion, it can take the energy and use it to detox and cleanse. Many people report an incredible sense of health and well-being while juice fasting. It can also be a great time to journal and think as your mind will be very clear.
Despite the fantastic benefits of a 21 day juice, you MUST talk to your doctor or health professional before beginning a juice fast. He or she will advise you on how to proceed and whether it’s a good idea for your current state of health.
How to do a 21 Day Juice Fast
Here’s the funny thing – a 21 day juice fast isn’t actually juice fasting for 21 days.
WHAT!?
Nope.
Here’s how it’s going to work:
- 8 days juice fasting
- 3 days to come off the juice fast
- 10 days of a 75% raw diet

8 Days Juice Fasting
8 days without food. Do you think it sounds hard?
It doesn’t have to be. For the first couple of days, you will probably feel fine as your body will be consuming the remaining food within your digestive tract. After that, your body uses stored reserves from within your liver. In a sense, the fast doesn’t truly begin until day 5.
The difficulty with doing a 21 day juice fast is mainly in your mind. It might not seem possible. It might not seem easy. It might not seem worthwhile.
But from a practical point of view, doing a 21 day juice fast is easy. To begin, drink juice (and lots of water!) for 8 days and nothing else.
To do a juice fast properly, you’ll need a juicer. If you don’t have one, check out the juicer reviews and pick one that suits your style and budget.
Once you have a juicer, you need ingredients. Go to your local supermarket and stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables.
Apples, lemon, grapefruit, spinach, celery, beetroot, cabbage, and so on. Below, you’ll find great juice fasting recipes to help you along your way.
As much as possible, focus on vegetable juice. Use fruits sparingly; only to sweeten up an otherwise undrinkable juice. Fruit juice contains high levels of natural sugar that can upset your stomach during a period of fasting.
As far as a timetable goes, juice whenever you want. Since juicing removes the fiber, the hunger reflex won’t be started. Whenever you get the urge, make some juice. At the very least, drink 3 times a day.
Also, be sure to consume a lot of water during your 21 day juice fast. Water will help your system to cleanse itself and will ensure that you do not get dehydrated.
3 Days Coming off the Fast
If you made it through your 8 days on the 21 day juice fast, congratulations!
For the next days, you need to eat lightly. You haven’t consumed anything solid for 8 straight days and your body will struggle with anything that is tough to digest.
During these three days, eat only fruits, vegetables, soups and other light foods. Avoid anything highly processed, as well as all types of meat (c’mon, you can last a few more days!). Eat often, but eat less than you typically eat.
You need to ease your body back into the process of digestion. And whatever you do, DO NOT give in to any cravings and gorge yourself on junk food.
10 Days Eating 75% Raw Food Diet
Like the previous three days, these 10 days of the 21 day juice fast are mainly about eating simply and healthily.
This time, eat as much as you want, but 75% of it must be raw. To make the 75% quota, you’ll need to be eating lots of raw fruits and vegetables.
To make this period easy, simply make a habit of eating vegetables with every meal. The best way is with a salad. Salad is very easy to make and can be made to taste great, especially with some homemade dressing.
During this time, it’s not a good idea to eat meat as your body will still be adjusting. If at all possible, avoid meat until after the 21 days.
The REAL Solution
After you finish a 21 day juice fast, you may be tempted to return to an unhealthy diet. Please do not do this!
While juice fasting can produce immense benefits, these benefits are only temporary unless a person is willing to eat healthy as part of a lifestyle. It is also recommended that you get regular intense exercise.
Living a healthy life is a very simple matter – eat healthy and exercise.
Doing a 21 day juice fast can help you along the path, but it’s up to you to make the changes necessary to sustain the benefits.
Juicing is a great way to maintain your health, however, you need to consume adequate amounts of solid fruits and vegetables for their fiber, which is essential for digestion. The power is in your hands! Go on – be healthier than ever!
