There are a number of approaches to juicing for diabetics. Some are extremely effective and some are downright dangerous. It’s a chronic disease with serious complications such as blindness and amputation.
Fortunately, the benefits of vegetable juicing can have a positive effect on diabetes.
If you are unfamiliar with how diabetes works, here’s a quick description.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease by which a person has high blood sugar. This is typically either due to the inability to produce insulin or because blood cells don’t respond to insulin that is produced.
High blood sugar causes symptoms like frequent urination, increased hunger and unquenchable thirst.
A warning about juicing fruit.
Due to the fact that fruit is high in sugar, if you have diabetes you should avoid fruit juicing for diabetics. It will only aggravate the symptoms and place you at higher risk of further complications.
With that in mind, avoid juicing fruit and focus on the benefits of vegetables only. By juicing vegetables you will maximize the nutritional benefits while avoiding dangerous rises in your blood sugar levels.
Also, if you are taking prescription drugs then you should avoid grapefruit juice at all costs. Unfortunately and despite the benefits of grapefruit juice, it interacts badly with prescription drugs. If in doubt, talk with your doctor.
What fruits and vegetables should I juice?
Brussel sprouts and string beans are known to contain insulin-like substances that can be beneficial to both Type 1 and 2 diabetics.
Phytonutrients are an ingredient needed by the pancreas to produce insulin and reduce blood sugar levels. Vegetables that are high in phytonutrients include:
- Onions.
- Garlic.
- Broccoli.
- Carrot.
- Celery.
- Lettuce.
- Spinach.
Feel free to add various other vegetables as they will combine to have a hugely positive effect on your health as a whole. As mentioned above, avoid fruit and especially grapefruit.
Why is juicing for diabetics effective?
It works because it takes a natural approach to the problem. Medication has its place, but nutrition has an enormous effect on our health as a whole.
Juicing enables you to fill your body with large amounts of life-giving nutrients. This contributes to a wonderful state of well-being and directly or indirectly will relieve various symptoms of diabetes.
Consult your doctor before making any changes to your diet.
